FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) Q: What is the difference between the various MST 48/55/65/95 NT models?
A: The number 48/55/65/95 indicates the size of the dish. There is a wider reception area with a larger dish as well as a higher level of signal with the same conditions.

2) Q: Q: What is the difference between the NT1 and NT models?
A: The NT1 model can receive a maximum of 3 satellites while the NT models can manage up to 12 satellites with a remote control and another 12 for special needs.

The NT1 is an antenna suitable for up to three satellite receivers.
The NT instead can be connected to tens of receivers for tens of users.

3) Q: Where can I find the serial number of the antenna?
A: The serial number is on the side of the radome. It is also be found inside the antenna on the box behind the dish and on the back panel of the control unit.

4) Q: Is it possible to receive 2 satellites at the same time such as ASTRA and HOTBIRD?
A:No, it’s not possible with the same antenna. It can be done only with 2 independent antennas.

  5) Q: Is it possible to install a speaker or a horn aerial near the satellite antenna?
A: Yes, it is possible if the latter is non-magnetic, otherwise certain measures should be taken such as the compensation or moving it over two meters from the disturbing element.

  6) Q: If the boat is made of iron, what does this imply?
A: The ferrous mass interferes with the internal magnetic compass of the antenna. Therefore to have a correct and precise operation everywhere, it is necessary to bring the gyrocompass on board into an interface with the satellite antenna. If the gyrocompass is not on board, an external self compensating compass will be provided.

  7) Q: Is it possible to navigate the internet via satellite?
A: Yes, by means of an apposite kit with an antenna from MST 55 NT1 and over.

  8) Q: Is it possible to navigate the internet and watch television at the same time with only one antenna?
A: Yes, if the transponder used to navigate the internet is on the satellite from which you want to see the television.
Example: The internet transponder is on ASTRA and we want to watch ASTRA’s TV channels.

  9) Q: How do you point a satellite on HOTBIRD for example?
A: Automatically. It is possible to point a satellite by simply turning on the control unit and selecting the number corresponding to the desired satellite.
(e.g. 6 for ASTRA, 8 for HOTBIRD for all models provided with a remote control) with the SAT48 unit setting up the N1, N2, N3 satellite with the selector switch on 3 positions.

  10) Q: The antenna is pointing at the satellite but we can’t see anything on television.
A: This happens if the control unit has two “preset non-interference” knobs. In this case, it is necessary to turn the azimuth knob a few degrees (5-8) clockwise or counter-clockwise to hook-up the desired satellite. This operation can be executed in error or lock mode, once the maximum signal is found on the desired satellite. Exit the ERROR mode by changing satellite. The new search should hook-up the satellite correctly.

  11) Q: Is the size of the antenna relative to the boat?
A: We recommend: the larger antenna based on the dimension of the boat. Under the rain and areas with limited coverage, the signal is greatly reduced. After all, installing a small antenna on a
40 m boat also seems to be an error of aesthetics. If the same boat navigates often, for example from Portugal to Turkey, a larger antenna than usual is advisable because of the limited coverage in those areas.

  12) Q: Are there conditions in which the antenna receives the signal badly?
A: Yes, these are the principal reasons.

The mast on a sail boat may completely shut down the reception of a small antenna.
Strong thunderstorms may cancel the reception even with 95 cm antennas, and very rough sea.
On the borders of the satellite footprint for that antenna size.

  13) Q: Is it true that in areas with limited coverage, the automatic tracking no longer works?
A: Yes. Our antennas are automatic or semi-automatic. In these cases, you can receive the programmes correctly in a semi-automatic mode by adjusting manually the azimuth offset and raising the signal to the maximum on the decoder. The antenna will follow the satellite even if the boat moves or turns. The automatic only systems will cease to operate completely searching for the satellite continuously.

  14) Q: Should the installation be performed by authorized personnel?
A: Absolutely. The technician will issue a form of test at sea after having carried out the required tests. This will allow the “special three-year warranty".

  15) Q: Should repairs be done by authorized personnel?
A: Yes, under penalty of loss of coverage. Always contact Navisystem before calling non authorized technicians. Navisystem will send the technician nearest you or the most available.

  16) Q: Why is it that on some boats there are two identical antennas installed?
A: At times for aesthetic reasons; often one is for television and the other for telephony and internet.

  17) Q: Is it possible to receive METEOSAT images with these antennas?
A: Yes, by ordering the MST XX TV Weather antenna.

  18) Q: Can I install more than one antenna on the same boat?
A: Certainly, if you have the space for it. Installing two TV-weather-internet-voice on the same boat is a very advantageous solution:

You can receive from two satellites at the same time (e.g. ASTRA and HOTBIRD).
You can watch television with one system and receive METEOSAT images with the other.
You can watch television on one satellite and navigate the internet on a transponder located on any other satellite.
You can navigate the internet, watch television and receive METEOSAT images at the same time.

You can use the telephone, navigate the internet, and watch television and the weather system at the same time by selecting the TV HOTBIRD satellite.

  19) Q: To send the signal to more than 4 receivers, do you need a multiswitch?
A: Yes, with NT2 HT and HTS systems it is possible to choose or extend the output up to 30-50 users.

  20) Q: Can you receive American satellites in circular polarisation?
A: Certainly, with small antennas up to 65 cm. You must replace the LNB that Navisystem may provide together with the antenna. On larger antennas, a DUAL POL kit could be required that allows installing two LNBs on the antenna. With this system, switching the monitor to AV1, you can see European programmes, Sky Mexico, Sky Brazil, Sat Caribbean and others, switching it to AV2 you can see all the American channels from DirecTV, Dish Network and other satellites.

21)Q: Do the Navisystem antennas work on a rough sea?
A: Yes for special needs of this type Navisystem has designed controlled models on 4 axes with high-speed tracking. These models have very robust mechanics for any weather condition and can also meet extreme needs.

  22) Q: What is a V-SAT antenna and what does it do?
A: This type of high technology antenna is for high-speed data transmission. Broadband is the key word for this type of “broad band” antenna. You can enjoy ADSL MARINA of 2MBIT/sec or higher with this antenna on the entire European zone and in many other areas in the world. The subscription is on a monthly basis with a fixed price. Besides navigating the internet, the system offers Voice over IP telephony to connect any user worldwide, video transmission for safety, video surveillance both in reception and transmission, and any other data that travels on the IP protocol.
